Colophon?
Posted 10 hours, 43 minutes agoIs the word “about” out of date or something? It seems like every random blog I go to uses the word
I guess it’s hip
It’s annoying, though. I guess people are trying to sound sophisticated. Sorry. Opening a dictionary, finding a big word and then using it does not make you smart. It won’t make me read your blog

Weekend project- the hard drive
Posted 11 hours, 24 minutes agoMy heatsink recently broke, so I sent my computer in to get it fixed (still under warranty).
Unlike the other times I’ve had to had it fixed, they didn’t nuke the hard drive. Sometimes it can be annoying to have to go and redo everything, but this time I actually wanted them to so I’d have an excuse to finally set up a duel boot with XP and Ubuntu options stock trading.
Since they haven’t, I’ve decided this weekend will be my time to nuke the hard drive and dive into the world of Linux.
Further down the rabbit hole I go. I have a feeling I’m going to be spending a lot of time here.

Why I ditched asides
Posted 15 hours, 31 minutes agoWhen I was going through my redesign from the old soft paperish theme to the slightly bolder look I have now, I spent some time trying to decide how I was going to style the asides. For those who never figured it out or weren’t readers back then (not that I have any now), my asides were just little short posts, usually with links to other sites. I’d post stuff that I felt wasn’t deserving of a full entry, but that I wanted readers to see. And this is fine, for a while stock options trading.

Respectable header coming soon
Posted 3 days, 9 hours agoThe site was startig to look a bit bare without a header, so I went ahead and threw together a quick one in the gimp and paint.net. Jonic taught me how to do gradients yesterday, so I’ve been going a bit nuts with them.
And if you ask me, the background is look crazy good at the moment, with the locked image.
The header is a different story. I have many talents, some of them impressive. None of them have anything to do with photo editing programs.
Ben Gray is making me a header, but until that’s done you’ll just have to do with what I’ve got up

‘Till Monday
Posted 6 days, 13 hours agoI’m out until Monday (guess why?)
It’s not that I have a huge moral obligation not to use the computer today and tommorow, but it’s defintiely a good excuse not to. I’ll probably respond to comments today, but I won’t be doing anything until Monday….

Why pay when you can get it free?
Posted 1 week agoYesterday my computer was overheating and randomly shutting down, so I brilliantly decided it would probably be a good time to make a “backup”. I say “backup” and not backup, because I don’t do a normal backup. The only two programs I really do a backup on are Mozilla Thunderbird and Mozilla firefox, because they take so freaking long to customize to how you had them before. Other than that, I like to start clean, so I make a list of every single piece of softare I use and the URL to download it from and save it as a text file. When I have to go back and redo my computer, it only takes a few hours.
I made a backup last night, and I was stunned to find that…I don’t pay for a single piece of software. None. Every single piece of software I use is free as in beer. Free ranges from stuff like firefox to stuff like Windows Media Player 10.
Here’s an idea of what my list looks like:

Dofollow
Posted 1 week agoMainly inspired by Chris Pearson I’ve decided to install the dofollow plugin for this site. For those of you not in the know, WordPress automatically adds a rel=”nofollow” to all outbound links in comments, taking away any google juice those links might have otherwise had.
In otherwords, to prevent spammers from benefiting, everyone gets nothing for their comments. The more I think about it, the more I think it’s just an excuse for people to be lazy. Why get rid of spam comments if they aren’t hurting anyone? The point is, I hate spam with a passion, and I don’t plan on ever allowing any spam to come in, so the nofollow tag isn’t doing anything.
In the end, I made the move about two minutes ago and installed dofollow. Leaving a comment at this blog now gets you a link back from a site with a pr of 6. It’s only fair. You’re (hopefully) making a contribution to this site, you should get something in return.

Worst website ever
Posted 1 week, 1 day agoThe search for the “holy” grail has ended. I have come accross the worst website ever.
http://www.freewebs.com/charleychalk/
It has all the lovely qualities you’d want in a website to be called the worst ever. It has a big ugly repeating background image, looping music, big hard to read fonts, l33t speak, and the like.
Pay the boy a visit, would you?
I hit the jackpot!

Automattic to take funding
Posted 1 week, 2 days agoMatt Mullenweg, the founder of Wordpress has just announced at his personal blog that Automattic is going to take some funding:
Automattic isn’t going to get fancy SoMA offices, throw huge parties at SxSW, or “get big fast.” We took a small amount of capital to put things that were already growing fast in a stable position, so from month to month you’re not robbing Peter to pay Paul. We’re going to use the money to pre-emptively address scaling issues before they happen, and continue to share everything we can back to the community, like all of the code behind WP.com in WordPress MU, the spellchecking feature we sponsored, free Akismet for 99.9% of users, and a few other goodies we still have up our sleeve. In terms of hiring, we’re still going to grow very deliberately in line with our revenues and focus on the very best and brightest (and BBQ-loving), like Podz.

People search for the darndest things
Posted 1 week, 2 days agoI know this isn’t uncommon, but I have been getting hits from some really weird searches lately.
That latest that inspired me to post this was a search on MSN for pig resin. I’m about number 5 on the list. I have no idea what the guy was looking for, but I hope he found it in the 0 seconds my stat package said he spent here.

If you’re getting a 404
Posted 1 week, 3 days agoI’ve done some tweaking with the permalink setttings over the last few weeks, so some entries were linked to at URLs that no longer work.
At one point I had the permalinks set to resiny.org/entry/postid. At another point I had them set to resiny.org/year/month/day/postid. I now have them set to resiny.org/postid.
If you’re getting a 404 on a post, check to see if the URL is something like resiny.org/entry/21 or resiny.org/2006/04/03/21. In either of those cases, just shorten the URL to resiny.org/21 and you’ll get what you’re looking for.
As for why I have the permalinks why I do- short URLs are one of my fetishes. There’s nothing uglier than site.com/2006/04/10/really-long-stupid-boring-post-title#comments. Why have that when you can have site.com/84#comments?

Should I make my theme available to all?
Posted 1 week, 4 days agoI am having a struggle right now. It is between the selfish part of me, and the Open Source part of me. That struggle is whether or not I should make this theme available for download. It’s based off of k2, with all the awesome code running it, so what I’ve done is mostly CSS, though I have done some php coding.
If I were to release this, I’d have to stablize it as much as a beta theme like k2 can be stabilized, and I’d probably take out some of the personalized stuff in it. But it would basically look like this site does now with a couple things added in (such as a header). I can make perfectly good arguments for either releasing it or not releasing it. I just don’t know.
So I need your opinion. I know I’ve got a couple readers, so tell me, should I release this theme for download or be a pig and keep it for myself?

Wrap your mind around this
Posted 1 week, 5 days agoPushing Illustrator and Photoshop to its limit
Posted 1 week, 6 days agoIn search of a header
Posted 2 weeks agomy site redesign (again) is all but complete now, and I think all that’s really missing is a good header. I spent about an hour screwing around in photoshop last night until I finally realized I just don’t have the skill to creat something good enough. Creating the images for this template probably stretched my skill as far as it can go.
What I really need to do is browse the sxc.hu and see if I can’t find something good. Unfortunately half the time I can’t even access the site, so that could be tricky. If anybody reading this has some mad graphics skillz then please contact me jesse (at) resiny (dot) org. We can work something out.
I’ve been looking at something old book/map-ish, because I think it would really fit into the feel of the site. Unfortunately, though, it can be hard to find a good picture like that which will work for a header…*sigh*

Small Fiction
Posted 2 weeks, 1 day agoIn case you haven’t figured it out, I blog for b5media. I write for their NFL blog. Recently, however, I took up a new project with a couple other people: 55 fiction has been launched.
The idea of the blog is pretty cool, and the stories are turning out well also.

Sign of the Apocalypse
Posted 2 weeks, 2 days agoWhy didn’t I think of this?
Posted 2 weeks, 3 days agoBasically the post is arguing that M$ should release a dumbed down, freeware version of Windows. Rather than explaining all the logic, I’ll let you read the article, but it’s a brilliant idea, and one that I think Microsoft would be wise to consider, though I wouldn’t count on them doing it, at least not any time soon.

Posted 2 weeks, 3 days agoIs a good game too much to ask for?
Posted 2 weeks, 3 days agoHow many years in a row is this the championship game has been an absolute bore? I honestly quite watching a few minutes into the second half, because it was downright unpleasant to watch. I’ve always found blowouts uninteresting, unless it’s the Steelers playing, and last night was an extra boring blowout. The officiating was horrid.
I’m not saying it effected who won, because there is no possible way UCLA would have won yesterday, but is it too much to ask to expect the ref to call traveling when a player takes 3 1/2 steps before a layup, or a foul when a player is knocked in the head while going up for a shot?

Resiny.org Design change- what are your thoughts?
Posted 2 weeks, 4 days ago
I’ve done some modification to the resiny.org design. I was basically told that I hadn’t quite pulled off the dark look, so I’ve virtually inverted the design. Still some tweaking to be done, but this is about how things are going to be.
So, what are your thoughts? Good? Bad? Best design ever?
I’m kind of liking the way things are right now, but I’m open to modification. I’m slowly working on an uber cool new design that will rock your world, but that’s not coming for a while.
